The Increasingly Famous Livermore Walnut

The Increasingly Famous Livermore Walnut

In 1999, the University of California at Davis introduced a truly unique walnut variety—the Robert Livermore. The Livermore walnut is the first patented red kernel walnut—a cross between the Howard variety and Juglans purpurea.

In 2009, the Barton family planted a small orchard of 4 ½ acres of this variety, and the production from that orchard has sold out every year since its first year on the market to buyers in Asia and Turkey.

The Livermore is a specialty variety. Its pricing is significantly higher than the more traditional English walnut varieties, and it is used primarily as a showpiece in white tablecloth restaurant settings as a dessert garnish or the perfect salad walnut.

The Livermore is only sold inshell.
